We currently have 2 cars and my larger diesel is being sold in the new year. We only use it for longer journeys for the one reason; to keep the dpf clear. It soon reminds us with an active Regen if we do too many short trips. Reading other fb groups etc, deleting dpf/EGR and what have you is very common but is illegal. I wouldn't risk it

Depends if you want to explain that to the IT department?

I was looking forward to getting a diesel van as my next vehicle....but not now with all the DPF issues. Will get a Renault petrol which has a trad 1300cc engine :okay:

If it is almost always going to be used for short/around town type journeys, then that is sensible.

If you will be taking it on main roads out of town frequently, then the diesel will be better. DPF issues are quite rare when the vehicle regularly gets driven at 50mph+.

My last two vehicles have been diesels, with DPFs and AdBlue.
Neither have had a problem with the DPF or AdBlue systems.

I use it seldom use it for short trips. If I'm not going far, I cycle.
I keep the AdBlue system topped up, and use an adiditive to stop it crystalizing.
And the majority of the time, I drive it leniently, as to not unnecessarily clog up the DPF. Occasionally I open it up a bit, on account turbos and EGR systems can get sooted up a bit from too much lenient driving. I tend to do that when the engine is up to temperature and on a longer trip so the odds of passive DPF regeneration afterwards are higher.

I would not entertain disabling any part of the emissions system on a diesel engine. Particulates are a massive problem in terms of the health problems they cause. And so are NOx emissions.

Anyone living within 200 meters of a main road has increased risk of calcification of their coronary arteries from inhaling particulate emissions. They also have increased probability of developing asthma increased probability developing cancer.

NOx emissions linked to Alzheimers disease and Parkinsons disease.
Pregnant women exposed to high levels of vehicle pollution are more likely to have premature births, give birth to undersized babies and babies with undersized vital organs.

Children exposed to high levels of pollution never develop their full lung capacity, leading them to lead shorter lives.

Vehicle pollution is associated with 30,000 premature deaths each year.

Aah but the OP will save money so that trumps the health argument, right?

BTW I got nabbed by the VOSA lot once. Easily sorted by a 5 minute walk to a nearby petrol station and a lightbulb replacement done by the VOSA guy himself. They really can be friendly, helpful people. Especially since technically the copper who directed me in did so because I had two different spec bulbs in so one headlight was slightly dimmer than the other. Both were legal.

I actually had fun with the lady copper who pulled me in. She attempted to sniff my breath which I spotted so stood straight up to my full 196cm. She was barely 5' tall so could get nowhere near my breath. It was December so she was only doing her job. She just laughed and waved me over to the VOSA guys.

It was my second stop. The first was by a motorcycle cop who I swear was a UK verson of the village people motorcycle cop complete with the moustache going down from the top lip to the side of the chin. I swear it is very hard not to hum the YMCA tune when handing your paperwork to that copper. I am cetain he would not have taken it well.

Best solution, is just chop it in for a petrol powered car, We did that years ago, best move we made, Ad-Blue System played up in work van, that does alot of motorway miles, about 30,000 p.a, and goes through a fair bit of Ad-Blue where you would think it wouldn't have time to crystalise, but that's what it did, had to have a new tank/pump assembly.

The vehicles not going anywhere...far too good to scrap.
I mean from asking a question to getting answers like this....

Made me giggle anyway 🤣

I have owned businesses in the motor trade for 48 years now, I seriously dislike dishonest people and your MOT tester is one of them, it gets our trade a very bad name. If he is willing to let you off with anything he will do the same to other so called pals, the guy should be struck off.

To be honest you've told this story already and once was enough thanks 👍

Well, if it reminds people not to be crooks, it is worth repeating. You know it is illegal, yet you do not want criticism, what was you hoping that we all agree with you.
