Down tube shifter - friction mode?

So it has no practical benefits? In actual use it makes no difference what setting it is on?

Not as far as I can tell. Double with a down tube shifter was just “push it as far as it will go” or “pull it as far as it will go” wasn’t it? That’s how I remember it!
