This bicycle, called the "RELATIVITY Special", if pedaled at 90 rpm, is designed to travel faster than the speed of light. This is proven by a description of the gear ratios on the sheets seen on the wall behind it. One revolution of the pedals sends the bike 6 times around the earth. (It is part of the art exhibition "Circle of Time" that Pat Chirapravati curated now on display at California State University, Sacramento).

Except relativity tells us that mass increases with relativistic velocity and at the speed of light a physical body's mass is infinite.

Since it is not not possibly to create infinite thrust it is, at our understanding physics, impossible. The rider would find the bicycle would disappear into the wormhole, aka his bum.

I learnt why that doesn't work as a kid when I thought it would be fun to cascade all the gears in my Meccano set. The torque at the output isn't even enough to overcome friction, let alone accelerate anything. (In this case, about 1mNm)

I'm probably unusual here, in that the thing causing me the most pain is the two characters I've emboldened.
[It's not you, its me!]

I have no problem with "greater than light speed" gearing - in fact I love it!

It's a fun thought for sure. Made me grin. (As others have said - it won't work)

Leave that negativity at the door!
