On friday i had a umbilical and abdominal hernia op and have been told i cant ride for 3 weeks.
I know that im going to struggle without riding for that long and i worried that i will pile on the lbs, has anyone else had this kinda op before and how long was it before they could ride again.

Thx

Yikes - that sounds unpleasant! Good luck with your recovery.

Do you feel up to walking while you are off the bike, recovering from the ops? Walking briskly can burn a fair few calories.

Really though, why not just watch what you eat until you are cycling again?

I can walk, but like an old man.
Im hopeing that by the weekend i can walk upright not hunched over, as for eating my wifes at work and its painful for me to keep getting up so hopefully that will stop me pigging out lol.

I had an ingonal (sp?) hernia done 2001. I don't envy you any. Take ya time to recover, the doc know's best on this mate. I pushed too far and almost ended up back under the knife.

When you do get back on the bike, enjoy the ride, don't go for distance/speed.

GWS and please don't rush it.

Correctly an Inguinal hernia. ....
Lanzecki gives good advice. A hernia occurs where there is weakness in a muscle wall. If you start pushing yourself too soon you could easily cause another hernia and it will be harder to repair 2nd time round. ....so a few weeks off your bike or risk never being anle to ride a bike again. ......

Listen to the docs and your body. Don't over do it. Three or four weeks off won't affect weight or fitness too much. It soon comes back.

Had the same double op about 7-8 years ago, both minor hernias that were more of an inconvenience than a problem but decided to have them sorted before they became an issue. I hate to admit it but the scars were PAINFUL. I was convinced I had ruptured them as they were so painful in the days after the op. Walking, getting in and out of chairs, climbing the stairs and for god's sake don't get a fit of the giggles!!!!!

My groin scar ached for years when cold or sometimes when cycling. It's probably only the last year or two that it has finally calmed down.

As has been advised by your Doc and others on here, take your time and then take a bit longer. You really don't want a set back now and in the long run the quickest way back onto your bike is to wait until you are definitely ready to go.

EDIT: For years after the op I often wished I hadn't bothered as the aches from the scars troubled me more than the hernias ever had.

Just take it easy and enjoy those websites!.......you had an abdominal hernia where part of the intestine pushes through a weakness in the abdominal wall. More often (in men) the intestine squeezes through the inguinal canal into the scrotum - this is actually quite common in men and may have kept you off your bike for a few weeks longer!

I've had a double stomach hernia op in 2012 and I've had an inguinal groin hernia op in June this year. Had the op in jan last year and it was probably summer before I got back on the bike because the op was also to repair the op from the previous year that I ruptured through overdoing it. The problem is you start to feel better on the outside but it takes a lot longer for it to heal internally so don't overdo it. After the op in June this year I was cycling again after about 4weeks but only as very light exercise I've only seriously got back on the bike this last week. GWS but don't rush.

How was it in the end? Hope it al went well.

7 days until I get the my second hernia operation (Right side Inguinal). My wife firmly believes it's from laziness. Last time she told me this as I was on a ladder cleaning gutters. Ohh the Irony.

If the right side's anything like the left I'll be off the bike until Spring.

I was riding after 3 weeks, but I have to admit my fitness dropped big style and it's been hard to get back to where I was.

Yeah everything went well in the end the hernia was bigger than expected so had a much bigger cut than was expecting but it healed well and feel fine now although have to agree with Andy G struggling to get back to fitness again but we'll get there.
