Doored...

I was doored the other day, on the school run. The street next to the school always had cars parked down both sides at dropping off time so it is quite narrow down the middle. I was consciously riding outside the door zone of the cars parked on the left, following a near miss a while back.

So I'm riding along, watching the doors to the left, watching my kids on their bikes, watching the random kids stepping out.

And forgetting about the door opening of the car *on the other side* of the road...

Luckily it was quite a glancing blow, I wasn't going fast and the door caught my bar end. Bit of a wobble and a shout and a dent on their door probably, no falling off. Lesson learned.

In other news, my son wanted to ride his bike down the steps at school. Being the responsible parent that I am I told him 'go for it!'. His nerve went though because his mates were chanting 'Freddie! Freddie!', being only 7 it put him off a bit. One of his mates said I should do it so (as I say, responsible parent here) of course I did, to the chant of 'Freddie's dad! Freddie's dad!'.

I'm such a kid...

Glad to hear there's no damage, but do keep out of the door zone if you can. Friends and aquaintances of mine have been badly hurt by doors - one is still involved in legal action after a serious arm injury.

I go along trying to work out which cars have people in them and then annoying other road users by moving out!

You didnt stop  Ah well NVM I'm sure the parent will still be around next week

Kudos for the steps riding, I'm presuming you had some sort of mountain bike. Steps + Road bike = pain last time I tried

Ouch, wouldn't fancy doing that on road bike wheels, especially with my weight

Good work abo , I hope you pulled a wheelie across the car park to finish it off.
Make the most of it mind, in a couple of years they'll be too embarrassed of you to be seen out in public with you

Reading the OP, he was keeping out of the door zone on his left, and got doored by a car on his right...

OP, I'm glad it wasn't more serious.

Bonus point if followed up with "of course, your mother needn't know about this..."

Thank you! You're dead on, doored from the right. High-activity environment, loads going on and riding as defensively for the kids as for myself. In otherwords, I wasn't watching that side of the road for doors carefully enough lol

I saw a car get doored outside my flat the other day... that was interesting, especially since the 'doorer' drove off after exchanging details with the 'dooree' when her driver door clearly wouldn't close

not teaching granny to suck eggs but when i feel i've no choice but to ride in the door zone (and those roads do exist)... I check through their back windows for any sign of movement as well as using the cars wing mirrors to check for occupants. If the wing mirrors are folded in, i rightly or wrongly assume they're empty.

Could be a dangerous assumption. I had a Renault where you had to flick a switch to fold the mirrors before you got out. Very safe, opening the door with the mirrors folded...
