Does anybody know where i can get some semi tight shorts that i can wear over lycra shorts. I don't want to wear just lycra, also don't want baggy mountain bike shorts.

There doesn't seem to be the "3rd way" for cycle clothing.

My answer is to look at outdoor gear. Using short liners such as Endura or similar means that most is comfortable for commuting or touring.

Also fairly inexpensive.

I use the Craghoppers "pro" 3/4 and full length trousers. These are stretchy, not too loose, water resistant and importantly very cheap at the moment

+1 on the Cragghoppers. Got some of their cargo shorts on discount and will be using them with good quality padded under shorts.

If your journey is short (under a couple of miles) then you might not even need a pad. Look at running gear too, Ronhill do some longer shorts, some with reflectives, and they might workout. Salomon so some trail shorts too.

Asda and Tesco also do the Bermuda style shorts quite often.

Tesco and Sainsburys cargo shorts are £9 and light in colour. Only downside is I can never find one in my waist size of 38 inches, LOL! Always worth a look though! They do running shorts too, I bought some for £4.

i find it funny how many chaps are against lycra, i personly love my protective lycra espeshaly the way that it disolves on contact with the road to maximise the amount of flesh in contact with the tarmac. the only down side is that because im a bit slow i seem to be makeing a habit of chaseing other men in lycra,

I use a pair of Ronhill Advance Long running shorts. They are very, very thin and I carefully cutout the liner in them. I have used them all summer and washed them loads of times and no issues at all. Just take your time cutting the liner out with scissors. Before this I tried some Altura Mayhem or something, I hated them I looked like MC Hammer with my skinny legs.

I have a pair of these , They are quite skinny, not too baggy at all, but are made of very stretchy material and so are pretty comfortable. they don't have padding so benefit from cycle undershorts of some decription.

They are great for hacking around, but are 100% cotton so they do not dry quickly and so are not so good if you're going to get to sweaty!

I use these shorts -

not very baggy at all, and you can take the padding mesh out and they look quite smart as normal shorts.

For some of us Lycra just isn't very flattering. I certainly wont be tempted into any until I am more man than lard. I appreciate these threads about the alternatives which ultimately benefit everyone. I guarantee you don't want to see me in lycra either also it's good to wear something that you can wear whilst not on the bike without feeling a bit of a goose. I just wouldnt feel cool going around in sainsburys all lycra'd up.
