Bought a cheap retro bike. Enjoy pootling along watching the world go by at a nice pace.
Trouble is - the seat is a bit uncomfortable after a few miles.
Whats the next one down from a Brooks (with the same comfort)ideally a third the cost

Many Thanks

Retro wise you should consider a Selle San Marco rolls

Sorry - but seats are a personal thing so there's no guarantee that it will suit.

best cheap alternative to a new brooks is a second hand brooks.... Standard spec B17's change hands for £25 - £45 ime depending on condition.

Were a B17N in black in pretty good nick to be your hearts desire I have one sat in the spare box in the shed. PM me if interested.

If GC is offering you a Brooks for that sort of price, I'd take it. I was recently in the market for a second-hand Brooks and had to wait until January (when most people are skint) to get one for much less than new: they hold their value well.

I'd second the suggestion of a San Marco Rolls: excellent saddles and available second-hand for much more reasonable money.

If you're keen on a leather saddle though, I remember seeing various Asian Brooks knock-offs on Ebay: can't remember how much they were, but needless to say much cheaper than the real thing.

A second hand Brooks saddle? I'm guessing you want the quality amd longevity of the brooks without the high price tag, so why get something that isnt a brooks?

My requirements are comfortability, quality and longativity I think are not in the equation as it is a cheap retro bike. Just MHO

A brookes saddle moulds to your rump over time, its a personal life long saddle. You may have a cheap retro bike but you can take the saddle with you when buying future bikes and just re-fit the old saddle if you sell your old bike. Invest in the best!

I wouldn't get 2nd hand Brooks (if that was even an option for you). As Bicyclos wrote, Brooks saddles will mould to the shape of the riders bum and unless you happen to buy the saddle from someone with exactly the same body shape, then you may be in for a dissapointing experience. Having had many Brooks saddles over the years, my advice would be to bite the bullet and invest in one. It should outlive any of the components on the bike, and can be easily transferred to another.

Few things are further from the truth in reality. 2nd hand Brooks are fine. If they weren't the prices would collapse and there would be no market from them.

Well, I have 5 brooks saddles and I just don't see how the shape the saddles have after me riding them for thousands of miles could be made revert back. So unless the new rider has sitbones similar to mine he or she would have to re-brake in the saddle again and I'm not so sure the results are as good as if it was from new.
