Don't text and ride

Seeing this article: Dont text and drive got me thinking about something I saw today whilst out on a ride.

Riding down a cycle path at around 10mph I come across a cyclist coming the other way in the centre of the lane texting away on his mobile. He was completely oblivious to his surroundings. As he got closer I was hoping that he would look up and see that he needed to adjust his course a little bit to avoid having a head on collision. However, his conversation he was having via text was so engrossing that he was in danger of learning not to text and ride the hard way. Not wanting to be injured myself I first gave him a whistle and then a rather loud oi. Which seemed to work, although took him completely by surprise.

Is very sad to think that some grown adults still want to realise the 'hard way', I personally favour my life and that of others to not assume it's fine to act irresponsibly. Yes he wasn't on main roads, but could still have cause injury to those like yourselve's also sharing the same path

It never ceases to amaze me the stupidity of some folk. Like the guy I pass sometimes on a shared use cyclepath who rides no-handed (a useful skill)

Yeah, that's Darwinism in action. Same goes for people using mobiles whilst driving. And if you say anything they get all arsey and who are you to tell me etc. Such people are welcome to die if they want but not to take innocents with them.

Thats always the way though isn't it, the texter/phoner/drunk/twoccer etc. usually gets away with minor scrapes while the people carrier they hit has three dead kids in it. Or thats how it seems anyway

My brother in Michigan USA does not dare ride on the road because texting while driving is not illegal there; he says you are quite likely to be mown down by a texting driver in a huge SUV.

Not picking a fight or anything, but how is that different to riding downhill and having a drink from your water bottle?

Does that make a big difference? I am not sure. It's still a one handed operation, it might need you to take your eyes off the road for a bit longer though.

Could be dangerous if you have a rubbish lighter I guess.

Not picking a fight or anything, but how is that different to riding downhill and having a drink from your water bottle?

I have no trouble drinking one handed from a bottle, getting the top off takes a bit more effort and I like to pour my beer into a proper glass too. The cheese and crackers can be troublesome.
