I don't know how you's manage to get from Norden past the White Lion pub up towards owd Betts! The prospect of that frightens me! Never mind that monster Colin just posted!

There is a killer of a climb over in Ramsbottom too. Its called Rawson's Rake and they are using it later this year for the National Hill Climb Championship.

You could deviate a little on your training ride and have a go at it!
I went over and watched the Nationals there in 1999. It was bad enough watching the riders with low gears, but some of the ones on fixed had overestimated their ability, or underestimated the gradient of the climb! There was a lot of gurning, zigzagging and near-toppling going on. Most of the top riders made it look relatively easy though. I think it was won by Jim Henderson that year***, and he looked near-anorexic - terribly skinny. I think there are probably a lot of those climbers with eating disorders ...

I found this video on YouTube. The rider who recorded it must be pretty fit!

(I did the climb on my mountain bike once, and it was bad enough using ultra-low gears!)

*** Yes - it was him - link.

Good stuff Colin. I think we might have to have a CC get-together at the Championship's later this year.

......... Now what was that pub he mentioned at the top.
The Shoulder of Mutton!

I thought the hill climb was an entertaining spectacle, but I will have to give it a miss this time round because I can only stand for a couple of minutes before my gammy leg starts to play up, and there is a lot of standing to be done.

I'd certainly recommend it to any other CCers in the area as a great free show. There is usually a huge number of spectators though so arrive early to grab your spot!

Keep riding and eventually small mountains miraculously become just big hills, big hills become small hills, small hills become molehills, molehills become 'drags' and drags become flat!

So true Colin, I'm always surprised when I drive a route that I've cycled; maybe it's because the changes in slope are more noticeable when you're going faster in a car but I often find myself thinking "This didn't look as steep when I cycled it!"

Footnote: when I lived in Summerseat I used to cycle up the Raike and then up to the Peel tower often, but that was on a mountain bike. I wouldn't fancy it on a roadie but I know it's there, waiting quietly for me so I've got to do it one day. I once cycled up to watch the hill climb and riding up the road to reach a higher viewpoint I suddenly found myself hemmed in by cheering (or jeering?) and clapping spectators. Embarrassing!

Have done The Rake on 34-26. It was very hard indeed. There is no easing of the slope so you have to just get up it without rest.

Though at 14 stone it is cobbles I cannot do. Hardest short climb I have done anywhere in the Pennines is Shibden Wall near Halifax which is 15-25% in places but cobbled side to side for almost the whole climb. Just barely did it in 26-26 on a triple. Harder than the Koppenberg in Belgium for me. On that same ride I did Long Lane near Hedben Bridge which was a doddle compared to the cobbled lane. Hardest long climb would be the climb to the radar station on Dun Fell.
