Seems genuine to me, if in doubt talk to the guy. "Hi mate, thanks for your response, as you do bike repairs it would be good to get to know you" etc

Seems to me passing on information like the groupset, size etc. is probably alright so as to narrow down possibilities. But as others have said, unique information such as identifying marks and frame number should be passed from him to you if and when he comes across an appropriate Specialised, so that you can then tell if it's yours. Again as others have said, that information would allow him to pose as the owner to someone else.

Yeh I agree with the above comment! Maybe he is a genuine person? Where did you post it? Was it a specialist cycle forum or just a location that everyone man and his dog could find?

The email came from Gumtree. So yes any man, dog, thing with eyes could have seen it. Also, I think Gumtree make you reply to emails through Gumtree for added safety. I know that when I used to reply to people on gumtree I was shown their email address. This is no longer possible, from what I can tell.

Erm, if they are/could-be in posession of the bike, wouldn't it be obvious what the groupset, frame no, marks and scratches etc are.
Maybe the OP could ask the sender who they are?
Have you also tried searching their email address?

No email address provided, which I know sounds odd, but it came through Gumtree and for your protection they make you reply through the site rather than handing out email addresses, if that makes sense?

I'll be shot down in flames on this part, but here goes
Bring up the properties of the email & check for IP addresses. Check those & you may just find that you "bypass" gumtree & find out roughly were it(origional message) was sent from. No guarantee it'll get you his home address, but worth a try.

As others have said. He should supply you with details such as frame number, scratches on the bike he's talking about. Not asking you to supply him with those details.

I'll be shot down in flames...

Thanks. I had a quick look, bearing in mind I haven't done this before and there was a lot of code to sift through. I found a couple IP addresses, one was private and non-standard (as far as my untrained eye can tell!) so I'm guessing that was something to do wtih gumtree.

The only other IP I found came from the Netherlands apparently.

Oh well, reading far too much into this now, haha.

Thanks for your help and comments.

I don't think I'll be replying to this one...

Sounds like a person who works in in a bike shop to me who gets a lot of offers to buy dodgy bikes from scrotes to me and just pointing out his / her concerns as they could be a chance your bike could end up at the shop and is fed up with people offering him / her stolen bikes .

I can't see anything wrong with the Email ? Am I missing something ?

That was my initial thought " what can he/she gain from an email". It's not like the person asked for any of MY specific details, or is telling me I won the Nigerian Lottery (again would you believe!) and would like my banking info.
