Nice to know I ain't the only one riding a Falcon Explorer, only mine's about 9 or 10 years old. It's been good to me, I just tend to forget to routinely grease the wheelbearings so the grease goes hard, stops lubricating and its new hub time (again).
I've never managed to get the Shimano SIS GripShifts to shift cleanly and efficiently and the BB was replaced with a fit-and-forget a while back. It's had new pedals (the old resin ones cracked) and a new saddle as I needed an, ahem, 'gents comfort' model .
I am planning to buy an expensive machine through Cycle2Work as I think it will pay off in the long run, but I see nothing wrong in re-cycling (pardon the pun) old bikes into new ones.
