Does anyone ride expensive bikes on pavements?

Today whilst coming back from a shopping trip with all the family, I noticed a Colnago bike and said - "Bet its stolen". The kids then wanted to know why - and I said that it was an expensive brand of bike which was riding along the pavement no handed by a youngish adult (along a road which whilst busy isn't scary). Plus the saddle was the wrong height too. Was I right to make that assumption? They reckon he might of borrowed his dad's bike!! I still think I'm right.

I kind of assume that if you spend that much money on a road bike then you want to ride it on the road. So would you agree that it would be the cheaper end of the bikes that would be ridden on the pavement? (Not saying that if you have a cheap bike you will ride it on the pavement).

I do sometimes. We're talking a few hundred yards not my whole trip and it's normally for a reason.

For example when i'm taking my jacket /gloves off and i'm about to wobble all over the place while I ride none handed (perhaps like above?). Although I wouldn't do this in a town / busy location where there's likely to be someone walking along the pavement!

I can't get out a junction so I set of down the pavement until I can pull out into the traffic. - Definately shouldn't do this. But I get cold waiting 5mins to get out of a junction!

I think you're right, going to work some days I see a chubby middle aged guy in a workmans HV jacket, rucksack and boots riding a carbon Specialised. Given also that he is riding out of one of Leicesters sink council estates it's a fair chance he got it for £30 down the pub.

Well I will add that it the person was riding with a mate who was on a full suspension mountain bike also on the pavement in an area between 2 council estates. Neither of them were wearing any kind of cycling gear. He definitely didn't wobble whilst no handed - seemed rather skilled at it despite the saddle being low.

For me thats the final nail in the coffin. He's clearly a chav and therefore the bike must be nicked.

Chavs always have to ride with the saddle too low. They spend most of their time either riding none handed or with the front wheel up in the air - and they never have cycling gear on.

I'm not a chav and I do wear cycling clothing - but it's still nice to ride non handed, especially when there is a girl riding in the group with you - it's a good way to show off:thumbsup:

I neither have an expensive bike nor ride on pavements. Not sure which is the more likely though... the latter I suspect.

Is cycling hands free legal?

Probably depends on what you are doing with your hands...;) and whether you are in control of your bike. If you had/caused an accident then I'm sure it would be blamed but I'm not aware of any rule in the highway code that specifically states you should have at least one hand on the handlebars.

And to get one better on anyone else thats doing it do it at the front of the group if your with one - its been known for me and another lad to be on the front of the group riding none handed for about 3/4 of a mile at a time.
