Back in my mountain bike days, I made something similar to these out of a cut up luggage strap, and bolted them to the pedals with some nuts, bolts and washers. No quick release, just slide your shoes in and out of the straps, but they worked pretty well.....

Mrs SJ had those. They are brilliant.

I used to use toe clips and when I started MTB cycling I tried clipless. Only fell off once when I got stuck in a mud patch and pedalled furiously still clipped in trying to get out. Fell on to a large soft grassy bit so no damage.
I lost confidence in them and all further MTB cycling was with flats.
With my trike I use spd as no chance of falling and far safer as feet cannot slip off causing leg suck which can cause serious damage.
