I appreciate the gross dimension mentioned by some but for those of us who can't breathe through our nose when exercising and without going into details, feel our mouth breathing becoming restricted and knowing a swallow might be a struggle during which we can't feckin breathe, there is little option.
If there's a medical issue then that's less of a 'gross' issue for me personally.
On the other hand I've had cyclists whizz by me, spitting. Now THAT is disgusting!

This thread's making me feel a bit ill. xx(

I am a snot rocket girl, I'm afraid. Not proud of it, but it's a fact. I think I have exercise induced rhinitis, which is much better than the exercised induced asthma I used to have, so I'm not complaining - too much.

I don't have much choice. I'd be wrangling a tissue constantly on rides and inevitably dropping a few behind. And there would be a lot of them. And I'd be riding one handed for much longer, which is not a good idea.

Yup, it's disgusting, but then I look at the lorries spitting out deadly diesel particulates, and the carcinogens coming from all the vehicles on the road and the disgusting splats of chewing gum everywhere, and then I don't feel it's so bad. My little deposits land on the tarmac and will evaporate in a moment, leaving nothing but a trace of dust.

(confession: I did once hit someone with one. That someone was @vickster. I still blush with the shame  )
I used to spit quite a bit and a hill walking friend who is also a doctor pointed out that it is a good waste of bodily fluids and probably best kept inside, probably more valuable to the body than the same amount of water to replace it. dehydration can be an issue in summer hillwalking and water is heavy to carry, so decided to get myself out of the habit - I still do 'snot rockets' (good name for them) would think that stuff is better out than in.
Do you drink your urine, too?

As with quite a few others, I clear my nose, but don't spit.

I'm actually quite proud that unlike a few of the people who ride with me, I have enough lung power to empty both nostrils at once, no handed, without getting any on the jersey/bike!

I forgot to relay my favorite snot bomb story: I hadn't long started back cycling and was crossing the Forth Bridge in a strong wind so struggling, I snot bombed but instead of hitting the ground it flew across the carriageway - and into the open window of a passing car who's passenger was taking a photo at the time...

Only once, I will admit it
When a fly went up my nose and out my mouth, had to help it along

Those new-fangled things called handkerchiefs have recently become available from specialist outlets too. You must seek them out. They really are rather splendid.
