Actually, I'm not confident fixing my own bikes (but I still do it) so why would I be confident fixing someone else's?

30 minute job, most of it taken up with cleaning, which your pal does, natch. Some folks have little confidence in the bike fettlin dept if they’ve never done it before, and that’s ok. Cassette & chain swap ain’t like its skimming a cyclinder head. Next time your pal may do it themselves.....which is a result.

you can learn fixing othet people's and once you've learnt enough that you've stoppped wrecking things you can risk doing your own
