Do you carry a lock/chain on a ride (road bikes really)

That looks nifty......what make etc ?
Looks exactly like the giant one posted before? I have one, fine as a real deterrent for a bike sat next to you but reckon it could be cut with nail clippers! I would not rely on it nipping into a cafe at least around here

I have a saddle bag on my geared bike, the lock goes in there, along with phone, tools and waterproof.

Although I've got a "Gold" standard D lock it's far too heavy to lug around everywhere so I normally only take it if I know I'm going somewhere it would be wise to use it.

All other occasions I've got a basic cable lock that will do for quick loo breaks and cafe or shop stops. Apart from Boston Spa where I couldn't see anywhere obvious to fasten the bike to near the public toilets, so I took it in with me and leaned it up against the back wall while using the facilities.

Cycling without a lock is inconceivable to me, I mean, you might not plan to stop, but life doesn't always work like that.
But, if you want to be that daft and risk it all for a few extra grams, then don't let me stop you, knock yerself out!!

To be fair, I almost always have a rucksack with me anyway for various reasons, so things live in it.

LIfe is too short to be worrying about an exta ounce here and there - I remember someone having a go at me because my bottle cage was 'too heavy' (because it weighed that of a dog fart instead of a midge's fart).
Aye, get a life!

I've never understood why people take it off for 'training rides'. Surely if you believe the extra weight has an effect (p.s. for most people it probably doesn't) then it's good for training?

Probably because you haven't realised that they don't "take it off", it is something the pick up when they need it.

Its amazing, I've bailed out others on a number of occasions, but I've rarely had to bail myself out. the last one I can remember was hitting debris whilst turning right and needing my tyre boot to get me home, I'd wrecked my back tyre.

Just wondering what others do.

To be brutally honest with myself, I'd never thought about a lock for my road bike until now. On my town commuter I have a big U lock attached to the frame, but on the road bike I only stop at countryside / village pubs: I do sometimes worry that while I go to the loo someone may leg it on my bike. Cable lock duly ordered, thank you for the thread, and thanks to @ianrauk for a lock recommendation which I've just bought.

D-lock if not sure of where I will be parking or leaving for extended time Hospital appointments ect they also have bike lockup units which you can also lock the door but it appears I am the only one that seems to use these.
Cable lock if the bike will be in view from time to like the group I attended, nipping into a shop ect, but then I also carry two tubes multi tool ( a new addition a mobile) purse mud guards bottle/s cages, sometimes two gps units, rear bag with drop down panniers. @fossyant kitchen sink well you never know when you need to wash up, its a small one mind in light weight carbon.

Always, in the seat pack thingy along with 2 inner tubes, multi tool, pump and tyre levers coz I want to get home eventually!
Serious question............how do you get all that in the "seat pack thing".
I have a 'large size' Topeak wedge and have multi tool, tyre levers, cloth (in case of puncture) pair of specs (don't want to risk losing them), flapjack & phone.
In my back pockets I have spare tube, hanky, jelly babies  and rain jacket if needed.

It depends where I'm going/what I'm doing. I keep a d-lock at work to save on weight for my commute. If I'm headed into town and planning a stop, then I take a heavy duty d-lock and cable. If I'm just headed out for a ride, then no.
