When I was shopping around for my first recumbent (I wanted a bike, with as wide a range of gears as I could get.) I mailed all of the manufacturers and dealers I could find. I sent the same mail to nearly two dozen firms.
Two mailed back with a statement that their bikes had 27 gears and frankly they could see why I'd want more.
Now the alternatives I could envisage for an ultra wide set up include a Mountain Drive plus double up front and a nine speed cassette or a Dual Drive hub with 9 speed cluster and a triple up front, I mentioned this in my enquiry and neither of the two replies mentioned these.
One manufacturer, AZUB, replied saying they could do an 81 speed set up very easily as they did this all of the time for their local mountains. I bought from them.
What was staggering was the number of firms that ignored me completely. They obviously didn't need the business!
Funnily enough AZUB seem to be selling more and more bikes, and now trikes, and their business is growing. When I bought my bike they had three dealers in Europe and supplied my bike direct from the factory. They now have 35! Enough said.
