I've heard that it's a good thing if you get a good soaking by the rain before you get struck. That way the current passes through your wet clothes rather than your skin. Haven't tried the theory out in practice yet though.
Yes. charged particles head from the cloud base to earth, usually attracted to the tallest structure in a random area. When contact is made I'm nut sure exactly what happens but the lightning travels back up the path created by the charged particles.
