You are in no rush for a job !

Took the commuter in for a new headset and re-spoke on the back wheel 2 weeks ago as my work place is on shutdown and i told them i do not need it asap as i am off work.
Rang them up yesterday when i got back from holiday to see if it was ready and they had not even started it

I have told them i need it for Monday or i will have to take the nice bike (which i do not want to do).

Is it me or are they taking the piss? When i went in a week ago they said it will be ready for last Monday .The trouble is they have their logo on my cycle clubs jerseys so do i tell the club about my experience or keep my mouth shut ...

Well you said you are in no rush. So I don't think there is anything to moan about at the moment. If they don't have it done by monday, then that is a different story.

I suppose the lesson to be learned is, be specific. If you needed it in two weeks time you should have said that rather than "not asap". It is disappointing though, the LBS could have asked you to clarify "not asap".

Not a problem with my LBS. They have a tiny workshop, so never have a bike in for longer than they can possibly help. I can just imagine the likely reaction if I said I was leaving a bike with them for a week!

Trouble is the first week the mechanic had not even been told about it , when i asked if they had done it he was not even aware of my bike i had to find it lent against some new bikes forgotten. The owner walked in as i walked out and told me it would be ready on the Monday , roll on another week and it is "next Monday "

LBS's tend to be swamped at this time of year since cycling numbers go up greatly during the spring and summer. Having said that I tend to think that more than a week is a little excessive. Can you imagine taking your car in for a service and being told it'll not be ready before next week?

One of the reasons that I decided to learn how to do the more common servicing myself.

I would think that when you do get it back one of the first things to do is find another LBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yup i do most stuff myself but i do not have the tools to do a aheadset properly and i did not fancy banging it in with a block of wood and knackering something accidentally.

On the other hand, I took my MTB in today for some, ahem, upgrades (don't tell Mrs Norm!) and said that they could do it in their own time as I'm not being charged for fitting.

"Sure, it'll be ready on Wednesday".

A little bit annoying but still not exactly all the LBS's fault unless they knew you wanted the bike back within a 2 week time frame. I'd always 'bound' a request like that... something along the lines of "It's not an urgent but I'll need the bike back within the 2 weeks."

I understand the 'support your local bike shop' sentiment, just as I do with all local shops. However in the end it is a commercial relationship. Service quality and cost are the key criteria, which is why I ended up getting my last bike at Decathlon.

Just to add some praise to my local LBS (Welling Cycles), I took my rear wheel in yesterday having broken a spoke (again). Took it in at 3pm, asked if it could be done straight away. They not only did it straight away, they brought it back to my house so that I could fit in a much needed nap after FNRttC!!! That's service!!

I take it they'll be on your Christmas card list
