Do I really need another bike?!

I went from hybrid to road bike and wouldn't go back. I did want to start going out with my son (using a tag-along) and also do a few canal towpaths etc so bought a second hand MTB so am pretty much covered for all types of riding.

While the schools are off and the traffic lighter, get used to commuting on the roadbike. If still not happy come the third week of September, reassess. If a year round commuter, having a second more rugged bike isn't a bad idea for the bad weather.

I have been thinking about commuting in the winter. And Im not sure skinny slick tyres are what Id want. Id feel safer on something more "robust". Heck, sod it, as someone said youre a long time dead. I may go for another look at the weekend.

You can never own too many bikes -

But on the other hand, strip your hybrid down and clean and re-grease all the bearings, adjust them properly and also really clean and oil the chain and you'll be surprised how much better it will probably ride. There seems to be a modern craze for supplying cycle hubs with practically no grease inside them and with the cones too tight.

Sorry, but what a very silly question.

Make sure it takes proper mudguards for winter and panniers, although for 5 miles you probably won't need to be carrying multiple layers of clothing

Six years ago, I bought a hybrid and rode it for two years of commuting, and a few thirty and sixty mile rides. Two years later, I got a road bike. I've never been on the hybrid since the day that I bought it. It's just a personal preference, not a rule.

IMO if you're commuting you have to feel comfortable and safe on the bike you're using, if that means another bike or full overhaul of the current one so be it
