He said he has a road bike - I am suggesting it could become more of a gravel bike, if so inclined but I doubt many conventional road bikes would provide clearance of much more than 28/32 tyres. If a bit more then happy days of course.

Think he has an Allez, not sure if a newer one that might take 28s, but maybe it won't take gravel knobbly tyres and almost certainly not mudguards with fatter tyres. So that's the summer bike, if drop bar winter bike needed, there's the gravel opening, but they cost rather more than an equivalent flatbar.

And isn't that a niche for an eMTB anyhow (maybe with thinner tyres, although drag on roads isn't such a great concern if there's a motor doing all the work :wacko:)?

Well I disagree with this, unless you are aiming to win the tour of course.
Most of my bikes would be classed as hybrids.
Make excellent tourers, round town bikes, sexual adventure bikes, shopping bikes, dayride bikes.

And I can ride some of mine on gravel as well.

Just a saddle change, right?
