Hi I currently have a road bike and a electric mountain bike, just missing a hybrid bike, used to have one but it was cheap and horrid so got rid. Now it’s been plaguing my mind for a while to get a new One but this time spend a little more to get a half decent one, but then I think do I really need one I tend to use my road bike mostly, I still take it on rough roads time to time dodging pot holes… i’m tempted but then I often end up favouring one and the others end up gathering dust..
Trying to also move away from my electric bike too.

Why do you need one if you have a roadbike and an MTB?
I have 4 roadbikes. Bought a used flat bar for post op rehab. Not ridden it for months

I hate to discourage anyone from buying a new bike but if you have a MTB and a road bike, you're pretty covered. I have a tourer as well as my 'in-between' bike so I don't want to be hypocritical but maybe consider a gravel bike instead of a hybrid if you want to increase your stable

I think a hybrid bike is the least useful of bikes. It will do most things badly and excel at none.

You do need a gravel bike.
Depends on the cyclist!
My hybrid took me on a fabulous LEJoG in May this year, including a reasonable chunk on trails/tracks/canal-paths.

I’ll never be a racing cyclist, so it suits my leisure needs for the majority of the time.
Excels at none? Excels at most, I’d say!
I added some SpirGrips to give even more riding positions…

That said, I’m interested in having a MTB just to allow more off-road work…..but then I’d also like an eBike sometimes (I do dislike hills!)….but frankly, probably won’t bother with either for some time 🤣

Well I disagree with this, unless you are aiming to win the tour of course.
Most of my bikes would be classed as hybrids.
Make excellent tourers, round town bikes, sexual adventure bikes, shopping bikes, dayride bikes.

And I can ride some of mine on gravel as well.

I don't understand this one bike for one thing another for something else. I have a tourer that I use on every surface and it has never proved a problem even with my trailer attached at times. Only exception being those badly thought out obstacles to stop motor vehicles on cycle paths but even they are only inconvenient.

The main questions are
- what would you use the hybrid for?
- can you use one of the bikes you already have?

On the OPs original post, yes I would get a hybrid - I'd say there is a gap in the current line-up and sounds as if they have room for another bike.

But maybe wait awhile until supply is better.
I'd get a steel one.
If OP at all handy, I reckon the best thing would be to buy a decent quality second hand steel hybrid and tinker with it. Will look less nickable as well, and no reason at all why it shouldn't ride just fine.

When we go to a fancy restaurant, do we need all those different forks, spoons, knives and glasses? No, we can eat our meal only with 1 of each.

BUT every single piece of cutlery or glass is a specific tool whose purpose is to achieve a specific task in the best way possible.

Same thing with bikes.

You don't drink red wine in a champagne glass; you don't do a time trial on a gravel bike. It just looks stupid.

Hybrids are the same/similar to a gravel bike anyway apart from having a flat bar. Theres not a lot in it really. The thing is with a drop bar you have more hand positions and can shuffle around the top bar as well. Not everyone likes drop bars. If you want a hybrid get one. I'd check secondhand as well.
