Apologies if it's a really stupid question - but when cleaning my bike the other day I noticed the rubber tread on my rear Conti GP4 Season was damaged (see pic below). No idea how it's happened (hard braking?) but it's probably been that way for the last couple of weeks.

The set of tyres has done about 1,500 miles. Is that to be expected at this distance?

I'm guessing I should replace my tyre ASAP - but just wanted the voice of experience from others.
What do you think?

I'd say a big yes for replacement. If the canvas is showing through the tread the tyre has had it.

Really I'd have expected to get more than 1500 miles out of it. It looks to my untrained eye like the tread has delaminated rather than just worn. Possibly a manufacturing fault or overheating due to a skid?

Thanks guys, I thought as much. New tyre it is!

Haven't treated it roughly that I know of. Just commuting on the roads in SE London so perhaps that is rough!

My Crud Racer Mk2's do occasionally rub so perhaps a bit of friction against the mudguard combined with a hard brake in the last couple of weeks has led to the rubber delaminating.

Thanks again, will get on the replacement ASAP.

Looks like the result of a locked up slide. The remainder of the tyre looks in reasonable condition - no cracking or other splits, just the squaring and the obvious damage. IMO, you need to use your brakes a little more carefully and avoid those locked up wheel slides.

I would normally say if its a rear wait until you start getting more p'tures than usual but that tyre looks well beyond that stage; replace. I must admit if I only got 1,500 miles out of a tyre (iirc I got 4,500miles out of a rear 4 seasons) but a lot of it is down to rider (weight, riding style etc) and luck
