I will be taking delivery of a new bike in the new year through the c2c scheme. Directly from Specialized. It may seem a silly question:blush: but will I need to totally dismantle the bike and grease parts or will this have been done in the factory?

No you won't need to grease. It will already have been done, or at least it should have been. Just remember to grease the pedal threads before putting the pedals on.

It should have been done, but quite possibly not very well.

e.g. the BB failed on my Allez a couple of years ago, I bought a replacement but couldn't get the old one out, so took to LBS and watched the mechanic snap a BB spanner trying to remove it. He said they frequently didn't grease the threads properly when assembling and so they were often stiff, but mine was particularly seized, leave it with them - I did, preferring not to wonder what they were doing to it, then made sure I properly greased the replacement when I put it in.

I've also serviced some wheelhub bearings before now and been amazed at the lack of grease in there, but headsets have been OK

If you have the time, skill and inclination, then why not take a few bits off and inspect them?

If the first few bits you remove are properly greased, you can probably just put them back and stop worrying.

If they're not greased -- or if, like me, you'll only be happy if you've checked everything personally -- then I guess you'd best can set aside a few hours. At least nothing should be corroded on a new bike, nor in need of a mammoth cleaning session.
