Resistance is only one aspect. Wind resistance (or lack of) is a huge factor. My turbo used to be set to a 'road' level of resistance, but my average speeds on the turbo were always significantly higher for an equivalent effort.
Reading all the comments I have to agree with the fact that distance on the trainer is a very delicate subject. Each trainer is different and each user also is.. So use the trainer to build a good base and to do specific workouts.
And the most important part is that do not cheat yourself.. You know what you are capable of doing on the route... Try to do the same on the trainer..
