So, having had a knowledgable friend replace the drivetrain on my Sirrus Elite Disc (as opposed to a barely competent klutz if I'd tried it) I've been told that the wheels are pretty shot and beyond economical repair.

His suggestion was that I get something new for the Cannondale Synapse Disc that has just joined the stable and move the wheels from the Synapse on to the Sirrus.

This all looks sensible (I've not confirmed hub sizes yet, but I will before I spend anything resembling money) only problem is, disc specific wheels don't seem that common. He said he'd used Mavic Askium's on his stuff and was happy with them for the price, but I don't think they do a disc version.

Any suggestions for wheels to look at? This is an £1100 bike, so I'm looking at the budget end here. Ta.

Hope do lovely wheels. Their website has details. Synapse is a good enough bike to justify some nice wheels, which will make a lot of difference.

Have a look at the kinesis crosslight cxdisc wheels. They are around £250 and weigh in at 1550grammes, they also have a disc specific rim, rather than a modified road rim.

Thank me later lol

Little bit off with the weight there. They are actually 1800 grams.
Worth noting the freehub body is made of cheese and many people have complained about it being damaged when they come to remove the cassette.

For the price you won't get much better though.

Just the phrase 'hand built' makes me expect a huge price tag though and while I'm sure they are worth it, it should never be underestimated how willing I am to spend 'small' amounts of money repeatedly before biting the bullet and spending lots of money on the best quality.

And the idea of hand building my own wheels presumes a level of competence that I don't believe I have (and that belief would be quite important if I was rolling downhill at 40mph on them...)

Nice, do they come in black? I'm going to have to talk to the keeper of the rationality if I take her suggestion to buy £180 worth of wheels and end up spending £350. I'm presuming they came from a specific 'approved' wheel builder?

When the stock wheels on my Sirrus Disc packed up (I didn't help the cause by hitting the mother of all potholes) I got some hand builts for £180. They are fantastic, so fantastic in fact that when I got hit by a car, the bike got written off as the seat stay was caved in and the rear wheel just needed a couple of spokes (though the lbs did warn me the rim may be shot, but so far so good)

My price was so good as the lbs built the wheels for free on the basis I bought all the parts from them.

Yes they do.
DCR Wheels.
Give him a call and have a chat about your requirements, you will be surprised at how much hand builds cost.

One point - you don't need disc specific rims. Non disc specific rims will enable you to use the wheels on a different bike at some point in the future.
