Thanks again guys for taking the time to add your thoughts to this topic. I am now beginning to realise that I don't have to slog myself to death on every ride for it to be beneficial.

I perhaps ought to point out that I am recovering from an eating disorder and also exercise compulsion.

I have struggled with the fact that while I'm not in the gym and am out on my bike instead, I feel as though I'm not working as hard - but then I do keep reminding myself that cycling is great exercise, and to be outside in the fresh air and lovely surroundings is an added bonus.

I also think that as I increase my food intake and improve my nurtrition, my body will thank me for it and my rides will hopefully get longer in time.

But..... in the meantime, I agree with the general sentiment here: any time out on the bike is all good!!!

Don't worry about it! Cycling is not all about stats and speeds. I have ditched my cycle computer - sometimes I do wonder how fast I go but it bothers me very little.

A quick update here.
My rides are getting longer, hills are feeling easier and my confidence is growing. I'm starting to feel as if the rides I've been taking are now no longer as much of a challenge, so I think I am achieving something!
Just feeling a bit apprehensive about going out tomorrow morning if the roads are still wet. I have visions if my sliding all over the place and my brakes not working because of the wet! A bit of a foray into the unknown methinks!

I am training for an Ironman and my coach has a strong view to aim at time not distance. Having said that, I have rumbled that an average route is 23.5kmh, a fast one about 25kmh and a slow one (ie hilly, and particularly one with lots of ups and downs) about 21kmh. I am a fit and experienced cyclist. So your 12mph is pretty much bob on what I would have done for that course.

So well done and keep it up!

You are doing better than I am, I also recently started cycling again but am only doing a few miles on each trip (my max trip is 7 miles).

I am struggling a bit with motivation aswell but this forum is a huge help with that.

Keep it up!

Well despite my mis-givings about riding in the wet yesterday morning, I didn't let it put me off.

Left home at 5.25am, got back at 6.40am after covering about 15 miles. I actually rode a route that I did a few weeks ago when I first started back with my cycling. Phew!! Forgotten just how hilly it was!!

But I can't believe how good it felt to complete the route, and yes the hills did feel easier than I remember them, despite a headwind on the return stretch.

AND ..... I even added an extra loop on at the end to add another 10 minutes to my ride.

So all in all, I think I'm improving.

Sorry if I sound a little self-indulgent with this post, but I had to share!
