check your bike setup, tyre pressure, wheel truing, gears etc, if somethings rubbing itll slow you down. if your cycling loads that could slow you down as you get tired as can the wind. if i take a day or two off the bike i find im able to cycle alot harder/faster and everything feels easier

I do regularly wheels a little out, not the best at wheel alignment, but not excessive to catch the pads, when I have some spare cash i will take to L.B.S. to have them trued. Gears now theres a thing I changed the ratios last wk from 13-15-17-19-21-23-26 to 13-15-17-19-21-24-28 though to be fair I did a run on Sun 40m @ 15mph avg with a 1000ft of climb ( I know not much) with the latter gear ratios.

I am just going to do a quick 10m (well probably about 40mins) and see, the wind was strong this morning and last night, it as died down a bit.

Pancake flat!

Also, think about it this way, shorter ride means time stopped at lights etc accounts for a larger proportion of the elapsed time. Especially if you tend to have to ride out so far within traffic, then end up on nice lanes on the longer rides.

Also maybe you are just tired, its the end of the week, you have been at work etc plus riding.

Maybe right about the shorter ride.

Well feel a tad better just done a local 10m loop at 14.6, quickest I have done it I think, I wont say I powered up some of the inclines, but certainly quicker that the 7-8mph I was doing in July and having to stop now and again to get feeling back in my hands.
One other thing from previous weeks, I started using straps on my clips, might be just getting used to them.

What you are experiencing is bound to happen if you are chasing your time every day. Try riding without the computer and just enjoy the ride. Or try to target a slower average every other day to give your body a chance to recover from the previous day's work-out. Most training plans for any kind of sport will have hard days followed by recovery days. Pushing hard every day leads to tiredness and possibly injury or illness as your resources are depleted. Then you get discouraged.

Cycling is meant to be enjoyed - it doesn't have to be a race every day - though there's nothing better than feeling good and pushing to a fast time.

Hi, I know I am not really pushing it so to speak, and I understand avg's vary, but this was such a big drop, thats what got me, I wouldn't have minded but I really thought I was doing well, i have to put it down to the strong wind we had last night and this morning, because I did a local 10m loop at 14.6 tonight.
For the record I am not doing to brake any records just to get to a good avg so I can take my camera kit out and take pics, but I want to travel further than my feet can, but because of the weight I need the core strength first, once I have that I am not to bothered about speed, but I will need a certain idea for being at certain places at certain times ect...
My work is here if you would like to have a look. Flickr

I'm sort of a amused by this: you are riding further in a week than you ever have, and are "disappointed" that you are tired?

This week you have a distance goal. Next week have a speed goal.

There a good days and bad days. The temptation to use average speed as a measure is tempting but can take away from enjoying cycling. Relax and enjoy yourself

Goal next wk a few days off, next target 600 for the month, which because of this wk I am on target, I am more intrested with a combination of both distance and speed as I want to start carrying my camera kit. So I need a core fitness level that I am aiming for, when I started back end of June I managed 8.53 miles at 9.3mph my aim is 15-16 avg consistent over an hr, I know the stepper the hills that will be effected also the wind, its just that when I start carrying the kit it will add some weight.
You see I have seen views a can do real justice to, but i also need to beable to cover a certain distance in a certain certainly around sunset, though I think one or two ideas will need to wait till next year as the postion of the Sun is moving further south each day.

I always enjoy it, even though sometimes not at the time. I think I mentioned, it may well have been the wind and traffic that slowed me Friday Morning.
I was disappointed that it was SO much lower than my previous avg's. Last wk my avg was 14.8mph for the wk over 5 days and 140 miles, yesterday morning it was 13mph over 19 miles, though I went out last night and did a local loop of 10m @ 15mph, so it was probably a little premature. Checked on Strava for the loop times.

I find head winds on can slow me down lots and cause significant changes in averages.
If I am going out just for me I will plan a route so the wind is a sidewind for the most part, Usually here its a sw or w wind, so I will go north/south (but you cant avoid it all), also having said that the route Thursday was a new one to me (well part of it), but also I have been in other headwinds and whilst its slowed me, not to the same degree as yesterday though.
Like I said I was probably a bit premature posting the thread, but the OH is not interested, so I had to sound off somewhere.

Brilliant Gallery some fantastic pieces there. Don't become too fixated by Avg speed, I used to need to keep it up or beat my last avg all the time but it's an impossible goal. So long as you feel you've put enough effort in you should be satisfied.

Paul
Thanks Paul, I know about avg's it's just I want a pretty consistent level before I will be happy, because the camera kit isn't light, so I know it will decrease my speeds, some of the places I want to go I need to be able to get back to some street lights b4 dark, I have lights but they arnt that great, something more for the shopping list, but as I dont work it takes ages to save for anything.
