An OS map still wouldn't show one way roads and no right turns etc....
Nope, it wouldn't. It also wouldn't make a very good cup of coffee, but it would help you avoid thinking that you have to follow an unsuitable path because you can't see any alternative.

How big is an OS map that it is too big to take with you?

A lot of the ride's I do, an OS map at 1:50000 scale would be of no use as I would have to carry at least 3 for the shorter rides, The ride that I have just done this morning overlaps onto 4 maps, I hate to think how many I would need for the longer 100+ mile rides? . Then you have to think about water proofing them in inclement weather.

Satnav is far simpler, easier and lighter, it just needs more care and attention before the ride on checking it for accuracy. Usually if it I need to be sure of the ride, I will download the route into memory map and do a fly through, and also download into Google Earth so I can also go through the route and take note of features etc and check for errors as well.

It wasn't too much of an issue. It just meant we had to go along a bit of a route that was unsuitable for our particular bikes and then a downhill stretch that was unsuitable for any bikes at all!! Was kind of fun in a way and made for a good talking point. My post wasn't meant to highlight a major problem, just flag something for fellow cyclists to cconsider when route planning.

I have a few OS Maps of the local area that I can carry around, but I have lately been using Maverick with downloaded maps as recommended by GordonB.

If you use an Android phone check it out - always handy if you get lost as I find it's always at that moment you can't get a data signal to work out where you are!

Just a good alternative if you don't have sat nav and don't want to lug OS Maps around.

I haven't carried a paper map while cycling in 10 years, I don't commute and all my cycling is 'going for a ride' stuff where I'm exploring new areas. I rely on my Garmin to route me correctly.

When I say this to some of the older guys in the cafe, they seem to actually take offence, like it's my duty to carry an OS map, compass, sandwiches, pen or whatever else they stuff into their oversized saddlebags  Not joking though, they really do get stroppy about it.

It's 2010 - I trust my electronics, well, as much as I trust my bike not to break anyway.

im always torn between walking / driving route options ,
if im going a long ride and opt for driving ovi maps always take nearest m way which isnt good
but if i opt walking it might choose paths or lanes , cant win really what i find helps is breaking route up into chunks and choosing driving route chamces are it avoids mways and
uses a or b roads dont know about google i dont use it for routes but i know it shares similar options .
