Those who know me will know I'm no whzz on the technicalities, but could someone tell me what the functional difference will be between the Cheviott and Cheviot SE as detailed her.

All I can see is the tubing but the cheaper one seems respectable.

What difference is this likely to make to the bike?

The difference in tubing will be subtle, 725 is stronger than 631 so the wall thickness may be thiner resulting in a slight reduction in weight and a springier feel (Very subjective!)  The 531 forks should also feel better than the 525, but really if you took the stickers off I doubt many would be able to tell the difference.  The reason I bought the SE is the lovely stainless steel dropouts on both fork and frame, I know, how vain, though the price difference six years ago was a lot less.  The SS dropouts do have a practical advantage, honest, no paint to chip and rust.

All the Cheviots are built up to order, so the standard spec is just a guide, you could have the SE spec on a Cheviot or the other way round.  The SE spec shown uses slightly better components, XT mechs and hubs rather than Deore, better tyres, rack, chain, cassette... The stuff Paul recommends changes, I know that he has changed the brakes and may have changed other stuff.  His website doesn't get updated often, beware the prices might be out of date, some component prices have rocketed in the last few year.  If you chose either I think you'll get a great bike and just as importantly great service.  Paul Hewitt is also one of the few retailers I trust, if you're on a budget he'll advise where to spend the money and where to economise.  He'll also do you an incomplete bike if you already have some parts, I used an existing rack, hub dynamo and saddle, he was very fair with the pricing.

I bought a Cheviot and have been really happy with it.

My choice was mostly driven by price as I could get everything I wanted within a Cycle To Work scheme budget - though I realise the Cheviot is a bit more now.

While I still have a hankering for those stainless steel dropouts, I doubt whether I would have otherwise noticed much difference between the two frames. And as PH says you are not just buying a bike from Paul but a really personal service. The fact that you go through a complete bike fitting exercise and he sets up your bike to exactly fit your measurements will probably make more difference to most cyclists than the relatively slight difference in tubing between the Cheviot and SE.

Mind you, if I ever won the lottery I'd go for one of his custom audax bikes.

Thanks for your views chaps (more welcome)

this from PH

>>you could have the SE spec on a Cheviot or the other way round

reminded me of something.

From the pics on that Hewitt page I listed at the top it looks like the frames of the Cheviot and Cheviot SE are different shapes, or "geometry" as I believe folks say.

Are they?

I must admit I rather like quite slopy top tubes.

I thought they were the same, the old website had the geometry and I think there was just the one table for the two versions.  The top tube had the same drop on all the sizes except the largest, so it will look more pronounced on the smaller sizes maybe the difference in the photos.  Of course it's possible it's changed since I bought mine.

I have the largest size, which has less of a slope;

Thanks for your help on this PH.

I had an email back from Hewitt's - they say they are the same geometry, but yours looks rather flat or slight slope to me.

As you say, maybe the spec has changed since you got yours.

Maybe there's nothing else to do but go round his shop and look at one when I'm up that way.

thanks again for your help

If you are going to visit the shop you should book in a slot with Paul in advance. I spent nearly two hours with him having my bike fitting session, and talking about the various options that I could go for.
