Diesel deaths.

About 10 years ago I saw an invention on TV which was basically a cone shaped end to go on an exhaust pipe for diesel cars. It worked exactly like a Dyson vacuum cleaner where it just span the soot out of the exhaust gas same as the dust out of the carpet.

Every now and then you emptied it out.

I wonder what happend to it?

Dunno, but your memory is good, I recall it too. Don't some diesels have a hot particulates trap that then heats the particles them to burn-them off?

I'm no way a greenie, but I have found myself pee'd off with the air purity issues and being sucked into it. I suffer mild asthma and strong hayfever which seem to get worse if I have to walk or cycle near really busy roads. Sometimes the air here in southampton is so bad you get a metallic taste in your mouth. ;)

I think the real scary thing is that the VeD charging for emmissions isnt working - people grumble but they pay, we've only seen a small reduction in emmissions compared to what we could have done.

Airports too... why do people feel they need to go abroad. Theres several people at work who will take holidays abroad several times a year... I suppose with the crunch now they'll be curbing it a bit. There are too many of us as it is, all trying to drive or use up other valuable resources

Yes, that's how they meet Euro 4 and 5!

Whoah!!!

Its not the PM10 emissions that are harmful. Ultrafines are from many sources, including DI petrol engines, and older ordinary petrol engines burning oil. Not to mention rubber dust, and natural sources.

I've known about diesel fumes for over twenty years. On a still day just following an old crude diesel car in my car for a few hundred yards will set off my asthma. The newer types still set me off but only after a number of miles. The recirculate setting for my car ventilation system is a boon as IF I see a dirty exhaust infront of me I can swap over to recirculate until they turn off or I pass them or they clear off into the distance.

Actually PM10 is sampled using a filter with a 50% cut-off at 10 microns, so includes all particles down to ultrafines. Natural dusts, tyre and road dust etc are generally in the coarse PM2.5 to PM10 fraction that get trapped in the upper airways so are less of a problem. For this reason PM2.5 is considered to be more representative of the potential health impacts, as it is not affected by the coarser dusts; nonetheless a PM10 sampler does capture the finer material and it was PM10 data that was used in the epidemiological studies that found the link with premature deaths.
