I'm not particularly surprised! I have had my suspicions about diesal fumes for some time!

Glad to see the EU are trying to do something about it. At least they are good for something!

Am I right in thinking that the masks are totally useless against particles of this size, and in general, motorists are exposed to greater levels than cyclists (although the cyclists are likely to be drawing particles much deeper into their lungs).

I think the govt. needs to be much more aggressive in congestion charging and restricting airport expansion and such like. The sooner they start levying taxes on airraft fuel the better! The restrictions on engines idling should also be enforced much better.

I'd better stop now, or I'll go off on one.

Yes, it's not new. People working close to diesel vehicles, in bus garages for instance, have been suffering health issues cased by PM10 particulates for a long time. I always thought it was stupid to promote the use of diesel engines for that reason.

3000 people killed per annum in road traffic 'accidents' but should we be more worried about breathing?
...

No- the two aren't strictly comparable. Air pollution doesn't suddenly strike down otherwise perfectly healthy people, it tends to hasten the deaths of those already suffering from other respiratory illnesses, the elderly etc. So many of these deaths would have occurred anyway, perhaps a few weeks or months later. That doesn't make it OK of course, but we shouldn't let stories like this be used to trivialise road casualities- road accidents are amongst the biggest killers of children and young people, taking away entire lives; PM10 certainly isn't.

Exactly why I hate diesels - the gov't are so up their butts on co2, they forget all the other crap that diesels shove out....

No they haven't- emission standards have improved vastly over the last 10 years or so. Look up Euro standards and compare pre-Euro standards with Euro 5. The main problem is with older diesel vehicles. Unlike CO2, this is a problem that is entirely fixable with technology.

It is really shocking what an old diesel gives out or what a modern car with a broken exhaust or emission system gives out .
