Those stops are riveted/bonded to the frame. It's probably a straightforward repair for someone who knows what they are doing. The frame does not look particularly well cared for, as far as I can tell..

It's a simple repair, get the broken pop rivets out of the stop and push the ends inside the frame then replace with fresh rivets. Smear everything with Vaseline first.

As Vickster asks, what is the rusty bit? Why is the plastic ferrule apparently worn away and the spring visible? Why have the pop rivets, which are soft alloy, rusted right through? Are you riding on wet salty roads and leaving the bike in a damp place? The condition of the cable end tells me you might not be taking enough care of the poor old bike.

Is something that the guys at the local bike shop never saw.. Not a common break... Don't worry I am not attempting to fix this one myself.. I clean my bike once a week or so.. I will be honest this stoppers were never on my list of cleaning parts.

Dude I love my bike..! I take care as much as I know how of it..! Like I said before this part (the stoppers) were not on my list of cleaning parts.. I live in Belfast and riding on wet routes is an every ride thing... Or most of the time..

I believe this happened as I did like 3.000 km on the trainer since January and the sweat got to the stoppers.. But I cleaned my bike often enough for this not to happen.

I had to re-rivet one on my bike a year or so ago,( 8 years old carbon bike) the main problem was the adaptor thingy that holds the rivet in the gun was too wide and could not get the gun to sit flush with the cable stopper and had to angle grind the adaptor. Easy peasy after that. LBS offered to do it for pennies but they could not get the cable stop ( couldn't be arsed more like it) and I sourced it myself from a bike builder and I had a couple of rivet guns myself.

You are a better mechanic that I am..! I would not dear to touch the frame.. Terrified of cracking it.. This is not a new bike but is my trusted one for long rides (2011) and I got it used.. But is what it is.. The guys at the LBS are talking to the manufacturer to see what they can do.. Lets face it this is not meant to happen..

I would be asking th question "why did this happen" as much as the one about how to fix it.

Did it take a knock, did it snap when you used the cable/shifter?

Has it been complaining for a while?

Are the inner's all shot?

I believed it snapped as I was trying to get to the big chain ring right at the start of a ride.. Theory said that might be carrying to much pressure.. And no it didn't feel weird or hard to pass the from one chain ring to the other at all..

If you're using it on a turbo trainer a lot, highly corrosive sweat is bound to get in the nooks and crannies. I used to cover any vulnerable bits in cling film when using a bike on a trainer.
