I love my car too; and I hate to be the bringer of bad news, BUT........ I can see the time coming in the not too distant future when oil becomes a rare commodity and makes todays fuel prices seem like a bargain. Unless some clever person manages to come up with an alternative to the internal combustion engine, then car ownership will be for the privileged few who can afford it. That is one reason why I am getting back into cycling; just preparing for the inevitable .

Yup have to agree unfortunately, the car has had it's time, plus with more and more people getting on the road every year theres just no space anymore on the road, look how many cars in some family's?, usually abut 4.The goverment will only make it harder for you every year until you can't take it anymore, it wil be such a that you will have to live in your car, no thanks, it's a bit metal at the end of the day that moves you from a-b.

Don't kid yourself, the car is here to stay. There are alternatives to oil like hydrogen, electric and even water and steam. The trouble is that oil companies will always squash all those alternatives because of: MONEY.there is still plenty of oil left and more to be found.

Yes, there's more to be found, but it's in ever more expensive places to extract from. When you add in the huge increase in numbers of cars in the non western world (for example China expects to double its car population to 200 million in the next 9 years) means increasing demand for a more scarce product, which can only mean serious price hikes in the future.

A privately owned car will get rarer and not a 4 in the drive usual thing.

I had my last car for 10 years until the final mot when it would have cost more to service it than the car was worth. Prior to this i had been getting fed up with the spiraling costs of petrol and insurance, i contemplated getting rid of the car a couple of years ago and using the cycle more but continued driving for convienience. Now the cars scrapped ive no choice but to cycle full time, working out how much i can save and also the extra exercise on top of my gym work im not thinking of buying another car at all, im enjoying cycling more than i thought i would, im working on upping my mileage and the ultimate aim is to complete some long distance rides. In the meantime if i ever need to use a car as for a gig at shefield last weekend enterprise offer hire at very good prices for a weekend, then its back to the cycle. After just a fortnight i dont think i will miss a car as much as i thought, mind you ive yet to cycle on cold dark wet days yet
