London is a great place to live if you're young. My 2 kids both love it up there as did I in my twenties. I wouldn't want to live there now though

It doesn't matter where you live, Britain is a country of closet alcoholics living on the edge of mental and moral breakdown in freezing damp homes. A small minority have enough money to insulate their houses, keep them dry and repaired, buy overpriced toys like bicycles and go on expensive holidays.

The crap is the same all over Britain; the only difference is that the decaying houses in the south look prettier.

It's not that people don't have enough money to make their houses adequate, it's just that they prefer to spend it on stuff from places like China and buy a flash motor.

I like York but in the part of France I also inhabit there is a small town that is the model of how to create a nice place to live. A mixture of old and new that knocks spots off almost anything in Britain. The amazing thing is that it hasn't turned into a ghetto for the wealthy as it would here and if you see a luxury motor there it is likely to be a visitor's car.

Actually - and this is a serious point - having spent time in towns up and down Britain, I've found there's generally something good about almost everywhere, if you look hard enough. Even Basildon has quite a pleasant park.

Is it the weather?

I spent 3 years in Leeds and enjoyed it. The moors and the dales were fantastic - you could cycle for 20 mins past Headingley and end up in prime MTB territory..

Where do you live in France asterix?

Part of my family is from near St Leonard de Noblat and I go there regularly.

Ah yes, Leeds... Where I was landed with a dose of a food poisoning virus... sort of put me off Leeds for life!

It always strikes me how self deluding people are who live in the utter poo hole that is the SE. But when you are trapped as a wage slave there, you have got to convince yourself you are living in paradise otherwise you'll go mad.

I think all the non-doms, politicians, aristocrats, fund managers and bankers in London have a choice.

Barnet,
My father in law moved to Southend, I don't know why he did, but what a dump. When he died his after the funeral drink was held in the British Legion club and I asked one of the members where the nearest cash point was. I was told that they arn't rich enough to have them. My god. I used to hate going down there to see him.
