Was out at 8.30 this morning, was a bit on the cold side, I'd planned my route around manchester and surounding area. all was going well till about 35 miles and my legs had gone, so a slowish ride back home for a rest.
Will take a few sweets/biscuits with me next time to give me a bit more energy

In work tomorrow and then off for the rest of the week so I will try another 40 miles

Well done!
It's always good to have some emergency rations with you, even for trips much shorter than 40 miles, but you know that now!

Well done on that. I remember the first distance ride I did, the last blossom trail bikeaway from BBC Wood Norton in 2010. I did the 27 mile route and the last 3 miles felt like a near death experience. That distance is a training ride for me now, so one can get used to it. The only problem with doing bigger distances is that it takes longer to get to the pub for that post ride restorative malted energy drink.....

Fantastic weekend for it. Well, it was in my neck of the woods.
Yes, 40 miles is a long way to go without any sustenance. However, after one 40 mile ride, your body should be more adapted to the next 40 mile ride, and the extra boost won't have made all the difference. Still a good idea, though, as you will need to fuel the first 40 properly when you go for longer distances.
