..mmm.. 20min descents  worth 3 hours of climbing! every rider has it's own understanding of safe speed. it's not possible to stop quickly on a fast descent, so there is always some risk involved (as everywhere). i go down the mountains in top gear, tucked in, both knees together, bum slightly off the saddle, hands in drops. brake _before_ the hairpin/bend, take the straightest safe line around the bend, feather the brakes through the bend if needed, accelerate hard out of the bend and keep repeating this. it's scary when you think afterwards when your head goes at 60kph being 1ft away from the rocky wall, but at the time it's so much fun that i don't think about anything bad. consequences would be similar if you hit the rocks at 60kph or 70kph, sadly.

Yes, and you can't practice descending without hills. When I moved north from E. Anglia I was amazed at the speed and confidence of the locals in North Yorks and the Peak District on the descents but think I have now got the hang of it!

Another problem post-winter, is that it might be possible to gain or maintain fitness on turbo trainers and the like, but that doesn't help on the descents..
