Dehumidifiers

We're having a new concrete floor laid shortly and the builders say hiring a dehumidifier would help with the drying out process so we could get back into using the room a bit sooner. Not a huge room - about 13 feet square.

What's the score with dehumidifiers?

What should I look to hire?
Do you leave them running 24/7?
Do they make a lot of noise?

I have a dehumidifier to help with my asthma and allergies, I leave it on all the time on a medium setting. They do suck lots of water out of the air and I would recommend plumbing the thing in or you will end up emptying the bucket a lot! They are great for freshening the air too.

We rented one from a professional builders' hire place. They asked for the measurements and gave us an appropriate one. You have to leave it on all the time (well you did with this one) and it wasn't very noisy. As said, they suck up an amazing amount of moisture.

I see - did you leave it on if there was no-one at home for a while? How often in your case (roughly of course - situations differ) did you have to empty it and how big was the water recepticle?

As far as I remember, yes, we just left it on even when we were out. It was a biggish container, probably 15 litres +. I can't remember how often, but I remember it seemed like a lot. But they told us roughly what to expect at the hire place.

Fab - thank UM. I'll give a few places a ring and see how many arms and legs they want for hiring it.
