....first ride today after 20 years away from bikes (little or no other excersize). Managed a staggering 3.6 miles!!! How embarrasing. Still, got to start somewhere...it was great to get back out and my new bike felt fantastic.

Looking forward to my fitness level improving

Well done. My first ride was only about the same as yours. If you keep on building the miles slowly, your fitness livels will imporve and before you know it and you will be riding everywhere.

Well done pal,my 1st ride was supposed to be 2.5 miles back from the bike shop ended up going a way I had not been before and almost got lost:blush:
Anyway did about 8 miles and was absolutely shattered at the end of it:smile:
As others have said keep going little bit at a time,I'm 4 months in and commuting 18 miles a day 4-5 days a week now + I too had not been on a bike for years.

Well done mate, been there myself. (And a lot of others here on the forum, so you are in the right place) 18 years since I roade a bike, mile and half was the first trip, damn near killed me. But stuck at it and now commuting avg 34 miles a day 5 days a week and 100 miles at the weekend. Lost 3 stone in weight in 3 years.
So keep it up fella, it will be tough but well worth it.

 Well done, well done!

I started commuting 1 year ago and on day #1 remember thinking on the way home "puff puff splutter don't know if I can keep this lark up every day* It's only about 5 and a half miles each way

Anyway a year on and not much has changed  Still puff and flap but times and avg speed have improved. On weekends I increased very gradually, from 8 miles to 14 to 17 to 23 to 27 to 33 to etc etc (you get the idea).

You'll get hooked soon and will doubtless be looking for another bike to add!

Greetings BarryP I started similar to you about 6 months ago.First ride was about 3 miles and I could barely speak at the end of it.

Hills that had me puffing and wheezing (or walking) then I can now just drop down a couple of gears and enjoy riding them.

It does get easier then it gets really enjoyable, remember to have rest days as well.

I do regular 20 milers now and have done a 55 miler, also lost over 2 stone of lard along the way.I never believed I would be able to achieve this 6 months ago.

Good luck.
