Well, that's kind of the point. The caustic soda degrades the hell out of the seatpost until there is no more seatpost to degrade. Problem gone.

No, I've never tried it myself.

Caustic soda used to be used to clean aluminium prior to gas welding.

A fixed cup spanner (yes - I still have one!) and a mallet have never failed me. I got the fixed cup out of a really skanky 70s Dawes last night, no trouble at all.

Probably about the same money in the UK. You have to remember that if the seat post is stuck it reduces the value somewhat.

Why did you mention a stuck seatpost. I have everything stripped except that damned seatpost. Will have to wait till I get the correct tools for the job, some caustic and a pipe wrench and my trusty 5ft breaker bar for extra torque
