....The public see cycling as hard. When you first get on a bike the first few rides are really hard. When they then see someone suffering while cycling, surely it puts them off! To most of us, even on a ride that is pushing our limits we enjoy it and we don't suffer, need medical attention or our friends and family flown in to comfort us. It would be good to see people enjoying cycling on TV. That may get a few more on their bikes.

Exactly.

You would think he might have the self awareness to keep his mouth shut on the subject of what is or isn't entertaining.

Possibly, but it is also possible that he may know something of the subject considering that for nearly 20years he successfully entertained people around the clubs and venues of the UK and then for another 20 years regularly had audiences of around 17 million viewers on one of the most successful programmes on the BBC, now in his 70's, he is still entertaining folk to sold out theatres. You may not like him, but he is probably qualified to air his veiws.

Who were her two fit-looking companions? They get my prize for extreme patience in the face of adversity.

I was surprised to see that after the pit stop at the Inn at Whitewell, she went straight up the horrendously steep climb right opposite the hotel. This was after climbing over the Bowland Fells and dropping down through the Trough. I can't help wondering how the hell she got up that hill.

I didn't notice that! There was no need to go that way. We are specically avoiding that hill (as a descent) on my forum ride on the 29th, because of its severity.

Yeah, but I'd have promised her a 'happy ending', so would immediately go to the front of the queue.

I'm reminded of comments made by Paul Daniels about home improvement TV programmes. He couldn't understand why TV companies would spend in excess of £100,000 per episode to make a television programme about refurbishing a house to increase its value by £20,000. He thought is an odd concept and a complets waste of money and not a very entertaining concept.
That indirectly -[edit:mind of a butterfly!] opens up the whole ethics of journalism.... is it reasonable to spend an obscene amount of money making programmes about hardship if the people featured gain no benefit whatsoever?

I think it does matter as we are now supposed to think she is a saint rather than an under-prepared idiot. There's no shame in abandoning a ride or climb or a walk if you're not up to it or the weather changes.

You completely miss the point. The public are going to give to charity precisely because it is a struggle for her and she is a well known face. No-one wants to fork out to see a professional athlete just repeat what they do in training.
