So, I went out for a cycle along a canal today and had a slight mishap whereby both I and the bike landed in the canal.

The bike landed on top of me so I managed to rescue it and haul it out but I'm concerned that its dip may have some adverse effects?

I think it was only really the back of the bike that went in - it all happened so fast but the majority of mud was at the back.
After getting home I put it out in the garden to dry off and then wiped off the visible dirt. Was thinking I should probably oil the chain tomorrow. Is this the right thing to do? Anything else I should do?

And yes, I do feel silly but at least I have a good story to tell for my first fall!

Quick hose down and a squirt of GT85 and you'll be fine.

You are the second person to relate a falling in the canal story this year, I think I may avoid canal paths.

As for the bike, take the seat out, turn it upside down and drain any water that may have got in the frame and leave the seat out while it dries and then lube and clean.

I'd like to know exactly how you managed to end up in the canal so I know whether to smirk or guffaw?

I cycled miles down the canals around the North West when we were younger. We were mad, I never fell in but Ive no idea how we managed not too, definitely came close a few times. I think your bike will be fine with a wash and lube. I agree with above, hope your ok.

I'm not entirely sure! It wasn't a proper path, just a tyre width dirt track. I think I wobbled as I went round a corner and lost balance. Pretty sure I went in sideways in true comedy style. I've been laughing about it all evening so feel free to join me!

The bike should survive, but there are all manner of nasties in a canal that could do you no end of harm - not least of which is Weil's Disease.
You should ring NHS 111 for their advice, or get to your doctors.

Sorry, can't stop laughing!
What bit of the canal? Must make a mental  note not to follow your example in case I pass it

You're in Scotland aren't you Pat (read your recent trip adventures!). In which case I'm pleased to say you should be safe - I am down in the midlands visiting family! I was attempting the Birmingham - Worcester canal but it's definitely not very cycle friendly

A few of my friends habe expressed concern about leptospirosis (Weils disease) but it seems even if I get it is mostly fairly harmless. I've checked out the symptoms just in case and will be sure to tell the doctor about my canal dunk if I develop any! I do wonder how many times I'll end up regaling the tale. Lady in the phone shop found my 'why I need a new phone' story hilarious.

That was the carrera hybrid?? My daughter is collecting hers today, apart from going in the canal, how do you find the bike?

I never fell in a canal but I somehow managed to do a slow-motion topple into a deep puddle at the roadside; my main concern was looking around to see if anyone saw it! Glad you were okay.

Carrera has been great so far - really enjoying it. So much so that my first instinct was to save it and not me!
Went out for a ride today and it seems to be ok, bit squeaky at the front but hopefully nothing major!
