I guess the obvious things are to check that the wheel is seated correctly in the drop-outs, and check to see whether the hangar is bent. I had a thing recently where my gears were slipping when out of the saddle. Couldn't diagnose it, but it turns out it wasn't the gears slipping but the freehub pawls breaking. I eventually realised this when the last one gave way....

Helpful as ever.

Not sure what you mean - I am simply agreeing with his supposition. How is that unhelpful?

He changed the wheel without posting on the internet first, presumably. So if the chain then jumps, simply dismount, re-sit the wheel in the dropouts and carry on. But he will already know that.

Why do you assume he will already know that? Particularly given the nature of the OP.

You appear to have a very low opinion of anyone not as immersed in cycling as yourself & many on here with plenty of experience having already learned from the simpler mistakes. Cyclechat is an open forum, there isn't a mechanical competence exam to pass or any cycling experience bar to overcome.

Possibly because the thread title begins with the phrase 'Daft question'. I took that as a clue.

I don't know why you think that. I agreed with the guy's supposition, as I already said. In other words, I agreed with his premise that something had happened when he replaced the wheel. He's probably fixed it by now, so settle down. I'm not responsible for your online fragility.

It's an easily done thing, very slightly misaligned the wheel which puts out the indexing.
The worst scenario is having a slightly misaligned wheel before trying to index your gears. Don't ask me how I know that.....
