TBH, it's one reason I like "Pro Cycling". The gear in it is absurdly beyond reach, as are all the things the people in it are doing. I know where I am with that one.

Is there a magazine out there that as well as giving practical advice to commuters and entheusiasts rather than boy racers, also does features on quirky hand built lugged-titanium hub geared scraper bikes?

You could get the CTC magazine or have a look at Velo Vision.

Whilst back in England recently, I bought Cycling World magazine.

I haven't read it yet, but on browsing, it looks to be more of a magazine designed for you (possibly) and me (definitely). It doesn't appear to be for the racer type (or MTBers), more for the day-tripper, audaxer or tourist.

Cycling Plus (IMO) has become the mag for the new wave of wannabee cyclists - 'all the gear and no idea' type.

But as long as you enjoy your cycling, I s'pose it doesn't matter.

That's a little unfair - it's definitely catering for the sportive set though, I think - folk who are looking to spend a grand on a bike to start, and go up from there, and largely for a particular type of leisure riding.

had a chance to browse through a few cycling mags in WHS on saturday. cycling plus = mag for people with far more money than sense. although lots of them feature silly priced kit. £185 for a commuting bag FFS thats more than first sensible bike cost, and more than my 1st car cost.

I had a subscription to cycling active bought for me in early november for Christmas. only as the free gift ( muc off cleaning kit ) was going to be the real present .

we cancelled in January after the kit never arrived and the subscription office lied several times.

I've bought a few, but when they did a two page spread on what was the
best sweet to suck on a ride*, I decided I could manage without it.

*Werthers Originals in case you're interested.

Here for rides.
i am not the target audience of any of the magazines i subscribe to whether they are about cycling, or playing bass, or anything else. yet i can dream, and buy stuff cheap off ebay from the target audiences in two years time when they, or the magazine have moved on.

I had a sub to C+ for a couple of years, (unfortunately) paid by DD.

When I got fed up with the must-ride-this-Sportive/ bikes over £1500 etc etc, I went to their website to cancel my sub.

Guess what you cannot do on the website ? You can check how many copies are still to come, even when they will arrive - but CANCEL

- No chance. So I emailed them and it took about 6 months for them finally to get it right.

'myfavouritemagazines' - I don't think so ....

Yes, I know, I should just have written to the bank and cancelled the DD but I thought .....

I have a subscription to sound recording and music-making magazine 'Sound On Sound'. It's a bit more home enthusiast than professional sound engineer level stuff, so actually a bit dare I say beneath my needs. But it's a lovely read, and all the 'proper professional' magazines are such back-slapping big-advertiser-owned dull wankfests (kind of like Apple computer magazines actually) I feel I'd rather hang out with the amateurs!

This month there was a good article on the founder of SRAM's affordable bicycle charity based in Zambia. a sturdily engineered bike can be had for $99. Good reading, but placed next to the inevitable mamil bling.
