I shouldn’t admit this but I’ve cycled on a motorway. We were following signs to a railway station and it took us onto what we at first thought was a dual carriageway leading to a motorway (but not before we could get off it) but we soon saw from the blue signs it was a motorway, and not a DC leading to it. One junction as quick as possible and back off. This was in the days before GPS.

Yes the railway station signs really did send you down a section of a motorway to reach the station. Because no one but a motorist would be following those signs 🤔

I ended up on the A58M in Leeds, 1985, before they changed the road layout. It'd now take a deliberate attempt to get on.

Police range rover passed on the opposing carriageway, I knew they'd be round for a word, and were quickly behind me, with the light in the roof extended to maximum height. Explained what happened, and then given an escort to the nearest off road.

@Brandane this is not the firsts time this happens, I'm sure.
Wasn't there a similar story a few years back?
The police went to get to get the cyclist, I recall.

I remember one guy on the Kingston bridge.

Just panicked and didn't know where he was supposed to go.

I think both entrances to the bridge, Charing X and the new(ish) walkway at Waterloo Street are a hazard for cyclists, confusing.
I was confused on the Kingston Bridge while driving!
Admittedly, I'm a bad driver, that's why I gave it up years ago

Yeah we can all scoff, but your right, it can be confusing especially if you allow a modicum of panic to set in.

More to be pitied than laughed at most of the time.

Although the African team were hilarious.

Many years ago, British (or Scottish, don't remember) wanted to start their Breeze women's rides here in Glasgow.
Me and a few other women went on their ride leader course: the instructors were from Manchester, did not do a reccie prior to the course, tried to lead us on the M74
Needless to say, we kept the instructors right!

A clubmate running slightly late managed to follow the M275 into Portsmouth ferry port on one trip.
To be fair, if you've followed the cycle lane along the relevant bit of the A3 and missed/ignored the jink up onto the shared footway, it's not terribly obvious that the other side of the traffic lights is motorway. No "non-motorway traffic turn left" signs or anything.

The Sri Lankan athletes were on the M74 during the commonwealth games in 2014.
