They are very loose terms to me, to be in full "roadie" mode I would be more thinking of a group riding fast and furious where the entire focus is on speed. however someone by themselves with a super lightweight bike and wearing the full lycra kit, I may think to my self they mustn't have been able to keep up with the pack.

Why?

My bike isn't "super" lightweight, but is a decent carbon frame road bike, and I normally ride in full lycra. But more than 90% of my riding has been solo. Riding with a local club a bit more often recently, but still do more solo riding than group.

If a simple wave, nod, or "good morning", can deteriorate into this thread, what chance world peace? ;)

Good, I think.

If 'one small finger lift' is substituted into the 'butterfly beats its wings' mantra; who knows what could happen.

PS I am having a positive thinking day, today. Despite the crappy Lakeland weather!

Why would you think that ? loads of people ride by themselves in full road kit.

It is just an amusing thought that passes through my mind - that boy couldn't keep up! but of course he might have left the rest behind - or indeed just having a training ride in all the gear. that would be normal too. well, nearly normal.

As for the acknowledging other riders, it really needs to be put in context, if i'm in Edinburgh, of course I wouldn't be nodding to any other cyclists, that would be very odd, there's hundreds of them, but crossing some lonely moor (the type of place I often find myself) then seeing another cyclist is a very rare event, in these places I would find it strange if the other cyclist completely blanked you, and of course it wouldn't upset me, but I would think - strange.

and I also see nothing remotely wrong in having a descriptive term for a cyclist, such as Roadie, or Commuter, or mountain biker. - non of which are remotely disparaging terms - although the term "Roadies" seems to be upsetting some - would another term be better? "Strava-ist" ,maybe

I am a cyclist, I don't know what the rest of the stuff has to do with it. As for experience, yes, I agree the vast majority of cyclist when they are in a pack heads down eyes on the road tend not to acknowledge mere mortals, but out in the country cyclists are so rare we want to celebrate one another if only to acknowledge we do exist - even if in a vacuum and amongst the petrol driven monster trucks.

It isn't the term "roadies" so much as the fact that the way you used it first DID look rather disparaging.

"the 'roadies' don't, could be a waste of a couple of watts or something, or even as I am learning this morning, they could be too busy studying their heart rate monitors"

yeh - may be if we had been in a pub having a pint you would have seen the cheeky smile on my face as I said it - if we (as in cyclists) can't take the pish out of each other.
When a cyclist is in "Roadie" mode - of course there is a seriousness and determination like there is in any competitive sport, can we not laugh at that. I don't assume that a roadie goes on like that 24 7 or when he or indeed she is in another cycling mode.

but they do look a bit barking as they all whoosh along as fast as they can.

Wave. Don't wave. Don't get upset of the other person waves or doesn't wave. If I don’t wave it’s probably because I’m not desperately needy for your attention. You will be just another person I pass in the hundreds of others I do that day. Many of which will be doing a similar activity to me at that moment in time but do not warrant my attention.

Are you suggesting that I'm not special?

Do you realise what a terrible injury that causes to my mental health.
