The clip I saw yesterday had been edited to reduce footage before the impact. Which inevitably made it look like the cyclists was more at fault.

Which is a perfectly correct term, technically.

Too many people wrongly think that "accident" means it couldn't have been foreseen and was nobody's fault.

It doesn't. Accident just means an unintended consequence.

Very probably. It certainly looked like his head hit the ground, although he did roll in a way that still might have avoided serious injury.

if the car had taken the proper line the cyclist could have just about avoided hi (not that they should have to) its the fact that they cut across the wrong side directly into the cyclist that makes it so much worse

I believe this is the view the rider would have had approaching. Think about what road position you'd use, and then think about how much blame you'd atrribute to each party.
(oh and if I'm totally wrong, someone shout quick!)
