Apparently there is a cycle path running south from York towards Selby that has a scale model of the solar system stretching over 6 miles. LINK Haven't seen it myself but It's on my to-do list.
You'll be a tad underwhelmed. There's a decent pie shop or two en route though.

They are on my to do list.

Cyclestreets is another good one, it gives you options of quieter routes if you're a scaredy cat.

I don't mind it hard (oo'er) :-), scenery is good, as far as I'm concerned. I know the peaks a wee bit, but not by bike

I ride Derby to York each year for the Rally, then back again after the service. I use quite a direct route, leaving Friday after work and not wanting to be too late back on the Sunday. From York - Cycle path to Selby, A1041 to Thorne (Stopping for an almighty fry-up at Delves), A614 through Bawtry and on to Blyth, B6045 to Worksop, A60.. I turn off at Church Warsop to head West, I haven't ridden the A60 south of there, but I'd expect it to be OK all the way into Nottingham. This isn't the most scenic route, but it's pretty pleasant, the times I'm riding it it's also nice and quiet, the urban areas it goes through are straightforward and only short distances. Friends who take time off work for York Rally find more pleasant routes, though it adds a fair bit of mileage. I used the NCR to York once, it was a mistake and I say that as someone who has enjoyed many Sustrans routes, I'd only recommend it to someone with a special interest in the deprived areas of Sheffield and Doncaster, or took great pleasure from picking glass out of tyres...

You could do the Sustrans Path from York to Selby then the TPT South to Conisbrough then South to Worksop through Clumber Park and onto Sherwood Pines, but this might be more off road than you want.

Thanks for your suggestions all, I haven't had time to check them all out yet, but I will do so. Thanks again.
