Anyone got any route suggestions? (serious question, although routes that make rude shapes will of course be considered)

Not many B's or C's to choose from then? Just asking.I guess you could do York-Selby-Doncaster-Maltby-Oldcoates-Worksop.
York to Selby is pretty easy. There is the sustrans route to Selby which is incredibly high quality compared to many other sustrans routes. Beyond Selby is more weavy and headbanging stuff. Otherwise you can use A19. Or a 3rd route is the B road via Cawood which I've done many times - great road. After Selby I prefer the A1041/A614/A18 and going via thorne although it's longer. Both end up at Donny. Done York to Sheffield several times.

That's a bit rough I guess. I have a similar bridge problem here with the Severn and Avon. Pinch points with traffic......There is a dearth of bridges in North Yorkshire. So if you want to avoid the A19 (as many people do when going from York to Selby) the choice is restricted. The river crossing at Cawood is the only crossing for many, many miles. There is a similar problem crossing the motorway/river aire/navigation between Selby and Doncaster.

That's local knowledge for you. It's not all bad. There's weird little triangle near York boxed in by the A64 and the river, it is amazingly quiet because it is rural and there is nowhere for traffic to 'go'. Similarly on bits of the route going from Selby to York, on particular days the cycle track can be incredibly quiet and tranquil can barely hear a thing except an Owl that lived near Escrick.
I would personally say that particularly if riding solo the remoteness around the Drax area and wind and lack of protection can wear you down rather than the main roads being nasty traffic.
Another useful Doncaster tip if is you are not allowed to cycle on St George's Bridge of the A19. The river Don has few crossings and it may look like all is lost, but there is however a bus bridge round the corner which google have marked very ambiguously on their map.
