Thanks for all the hints and tips and useful links I have not replied earlier due to other commitments but rest assured I have not given up and am currently googling some of the places mentioned. Unfortunately my buddy who will be joining me for the cycling has broken a bone in her foot so I have had to put cycling on hold but it has given me chance to improve fitness and currently swimming and walking. I have also found some good activity weekends where several things can be tried out - I fancy trying Canadian Kayaking and the pony treking along with the cycling. Please keep advice coming as I am a complete beginer and never thought I would ride a bike again.

Pony treking is good fun, a bit like cycling, it will always rain once you are miles from home. I would say take up horse riding first, bound to be a stables near to you, and as it is in the main a girly thing you get to meet new friends. but it makes the pony treking much more fun.

Buggi's mention of charity rides has reminded me about Charity Adventure. They organise fundraising cycle events of about 2-4 days. I did the one to Amsterdam last year and it's aimed at the more novice cyclist as it's flat. It's done over 5 days though so may be more than you're looking for.

Pont Trekking should be fun! I always wanted to ride as a kid but we never had the money, and I actually learned a few years back, had lessons for a couple of years. Eventually my nerve (and money) gave out, but it was fun.

Whereasbout in the country are you? Let us know, and there may be a Cyclechatter local to you who could recommend some routes, or would be happy to come along on a sociable ride.
